After taking this tour of the Northwest with WEMT, I would definitely return to the area. I am much more confident about touring on my own now.”
Explore Southern Appalachia and the Great Smoky Mountains on this year’s East Coast TEACHING TOUR. Winding our way through North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee, we ride, learn and grow together in our passion and skill with motorcycling. We’ll explore scenic byways, ride curvy roads, and try everything in between gaining confidence and learning about touring while touring. We’ll hit all the highlights of this area: the Cherohala Skyway, Tail of the Dragon, Back of the Dragon, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Join us for ten magical days together riding with your newfound friends. [This teaching tour has an abbreviated version of the Awesome Appalachia tour and is perfect for women wanting to gain confidence touring *while* touring in a group as well as experienced women who want to explore this area and ride hard and fast in a separate group.]
Arrive at the Switzerland Inn, a Blue Ridge Parkway Resort (near Asheville, NC): Welcome Dinner
Welcome gathering and our first dinner together.
Second night at the Switzerland Inn
On our first day of riding together in Western North Carolina. Experience the sweeping curves and amazing scenery of the Diamondback (NC 226A), offering more than 190 steep, climbing curves in just 12 miles.
Overnight in Wytheville, Virginia
Today we head north up the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway towards the beautiful small town of Wytheville, Virginia (pronounced WITH-vill). Founded in 1792 and named for the first signer of the Declaration of Independence for Virginia – George Wythe – this small southern community will charm you after a leisurely day exploring along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Overnight in Sevierville, TN
We’re Southbound today, skirting the Cherokee National Forest and heading into our third state in as many days. We’ll be riding two-lane roads all day, heading to Dolly Parton’s hometown of Sevierville, Tennessee for the night.
Overnight in the Deal’s Gap area
We’re southbound again today, today on gorgeous Route 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We’ll head West once we reach Cherokee (end of the Blue Ridge Parkway) and cross over the Nantahala River on our way to Stecoah. We’ll visit the famous Fontana Dam, and if the group is keen on it, we’ll ride the Tail of the Dragon down and back up for an appetizer before dinner.
Second night in the Deal’s Gap area
Our big loop today includes one of Alisa’s favorite roads, the Cherohala Skyway. Luckily we stay at the same hotel twice so we don’t have to pack up in the morning…simply get up, eat breakfast, then RIDE!
Last night on tour in Asheville, NC
On our last day of riding together, we once again seek out the small roads in western North Carolina. With a mid-day stop at the Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum, we conveniently end our tour in Asheville, where we’ll have our farewell dinner.
Breakfast – then Goodbye
We start the day with a great breakfast, then we all head home, remembering all the fabulous roads we’ve ridden, our newly formed friendships cemented on the tour, and the magnificent scenery of the awesome Appalachian region. [Little Switzerland is only 53 miles from Asheville, NC, the nearest airport and motorcycle rental depot.]
